FYSP 070 - Should We Eat Meat? The History of the Debate

FC ARHU WINT
4 credits
How should humans treat animals? What is at stake in this question? In this seminar students will critically engage with contemporary arguments about animal rights and trace the roots of the modern debate to ancient philosophy and religion. Key topics include: ritual sacrifice, animal cognition, the history of animal use and meat production, the origins of dietary codes (e.g., kosher and halal), and how emotion relates to reason. Through exploring these topics, students will develop their skills in critical reading, writing, and respectful, constructive dialogue.
