GERM 316 - After the Ashes: German Literature Post-1945FC ARHU CD 4 credits In the wake of WWII, the philosopher Theodor Adorno maintained that it was barbaric to write a poem after Auschwitz. German writers disagreed but were faced with processing the horrific past while searching for a viable future. In this course, we will study how members of the literary circle Gruppe 47 and others wrestled with this challenge and ultimately found means of expression in an array of genres that have influenced German culture to the present. Taught in German.
Prerequisites: German 204 or the equivalent.
