GSFS 265 - The Poetics and Politics of Health: Intro to Critical Health HumanitiesFC ARHU 4 credits The humanities and arts provide unique insight into the human condition - pain and suffering, wellness and joy, personhood and dehumanization, and, of course, health and disease. This course explores the intersection of gender, race, and health through the lens of the humanities (e.g., the study of art, literature, performance, film, culture, media, history, philosophy, etc.). Using humanistic methodologies (e.g., reflection, close reading, contextualization, interpretation, and critical thinking), we will interrogate the history and culture of medicine; explore embodiment, identity and sociality; investigate the causes of racial and gender health disparities; and consider the politics and aesthetics of health and healthcare.
This course is appropriate for new students.
