EAST 234 - Screening ChinaFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course explores the history and development of Chinese cinema. It discusses “film in China” and “China in films” by focusing on the function of cinema and reconfigurations of time, space, gender, and history in Chinese films under different historical conditions since the early twentieth century. In this course, students will gain a general understanding of the history of Chinese cinema, investigate significant themes that influenced the development of Chinese-language films, become familiar with popular genres in Chinese film history, understand the complexity of the term “Chinese cinema,” and learn how to interpret and contextualize filmic materials.
