RELG 271 - American IslamFC ARHU CD 4 credits Is Islam an American religion? Who are American Muslims? In this course, we will explore the history of Islam in America through issues of race, gender, multiculturalism, political violence, and social justice. Beginning with the earliest Muslims in the Americas (enslaved West African peoples), we will consider how Islam functions in the American imagination as a lived tradition, a resource for liberation, and a security threat. Topics covered include Black Islamic traditions and the civil rights movement; immigration and demographic shifts; the war on terror, Islamophobia, and gender politics; and the cultural, literary, and artistic productions of American Muslims.
