EAST 147 - Chinese Ethnic Minorities in Multimedia Representations

This course examines China’s ethnic minorities through use of a multimedia lens. Minzu (ethnic community) is a slippery term evoking a series of intricate relationships with race, ethnicity, nationality, and indigeneity. We will investigate these concepts and relevant theories to understand the complexity of ethnic issues in China. By discussing cinematic, literary, photographic, animated, and new media texts, we will closely examine how minorities’ identities are appropriated and consumed, as well as how they simultaneously negotiate with the Han-centric social structure and respond to the impact of globalization.
