AAST 170 - Intro to Africana Dance and Choreographic PracticesFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course explores African and African Diaspora Dance Techniques and Choreographic Practices, focusing on polycentric and polyrhythmic movements. It emphasizes the embodiment of these dance traditions to foster a rich vocabulary for storytelling and artistic expression. Students will engage with the Talawa Technique, mastering movements rooted in African and Caribbean cultural practices. The curriculum integrates theoretical insights with practical sessions, exploring themes such as cultural appropriation, historical contexts, and the impact of digital technology on traditional forms. Assessments include practical dance performances, collaborative projects, and reflective essays. This dynamic course offers students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of cultural nuances in dance and enhance their skills in expressive movement and theoretical analysis. Can be repeated once for credit.
