AAST 144 - History of African and Caribbean DanceFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course delves into the rich and dynamic histories of African and Caribbean dance, exploring their origins, evolution, and influence across the globe. By examining traditional and contemporary dance forms, students will gain an understanding of the cultural, social, and political contexts that have shaped these vibrant art forms. A particular focus will be on the Voudun and African Polyspirit traditions, which provide a compelling lens through which to view performance arts. This perspective views the body not just as a vessel for dance but as a medium through which urgency and spirit dance, allowing the urgency of a community to animate the body. This offers new insights into the theorization of dance genres like Hip Hop and Vogue, emerging from intense socio-political ‘pressure cookers.’ Through a blend of lectures, readings, and practical workshops, this course offers a comprehensive exploration of African and Caribbean dance traditions and their significant roles in cultural identity and diasporic exchanges.
This course is appropriate for new students. This course is cross-listed with DANC-144
