CIME 225 - Sound for Filmmakers

FC ARHU
4 credits
In the century that has passed since synchronized sound was added to moving pictures, audio in film has transitioned from gimmick to necessity to integral aspect of cinematic narrative. Expressive sound in film is now so sophisticated that it can be the primary mode through which we experience story. In this class, we will be exploring the technology and artistry necessary to create, capture, and synthesize sound such that it can be manipulated in ways that it serves as the sole determinant of a fully realized narrative and/or support the experience of a visual story. We will address the foundational practicalities of sound in film, like knowing how to plan for the appropriate microphone setup given your specific production environment, how to monitor audio capture during recording, and how to organize and work through a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) such that meaningful sound can be mixed and effectively delivered.  Throughout the semester, we will also develop critical perspective on the use of sound in cinema, which will include listening and responding to sound from diverse sources, honing discursive skills to address the listening experience, and rethinking sound as a guide for the imagination when image alone cannot suffice.

Prerequisites: CIME 115.
