MUTH 347 - Mathematical Approaches to Music TheoryFC CNDP DDHU 4 credits This course introduces students to the spaces where foundational concepts in mathematics intersect musical objects and processes. Students will learn about the principal ways that mathematical ideas are applied to the creation and analysis of music and incorporate these ideas into their own creative and analytical activities. Mathematical concepts will include group theory, topology, graph theory, and relations and functions. Applications will include acoustics, tuning systems, harmonic relationships, rhythm and meter, motivic analysis, and corpus studies. Emphasis will be placed on principles and techniques that are applicable to multiple musical styles, traditions, and historical periods.
Prerequisites: Completion of two 200-level MUTH courses or permission of the instructor.
