EXCO 423 - Film EditCo

2 credits
French Filmmaker Robert Bresson says,”A film is born three times. First in the writing of the script, once again in the shooting, and finally in the editing.” Oberlin teaches classes for screenwriting and production, but it leaves out that final piece of the puzzle. The piece that combines all the work into one coherent piece: the edit. Many directors set out to make films thinking anything is possible in the edit. When they sit down with their editor later or start editing themselves, it turns out that a lot of their ideas and the vision for their film can’t be executed for various reasons: impossibility, budget, time, or skill. This course will teach people how to think like an editor and edit their films! Students will be taken through all the steps of editing, starting with the stringout and ending with the final export. As you take this course, you will be taken through editing exercises and be able to apply these techniques to your own films. Students will come out of this course with a good understanding of editing and the ability to edit their own full films. This class is personalized to each group of students.
