EXCO 424 - Beyond the Pages: Leading Dynamic Book Club Discussion in Middle School

This course will provide a unique opportunity to plan for and facilitate book club discussions with the 7th grade students at Langston Middle School. This course will not only benefit the college students at Oberlin, but will also support the students at Langston Middle School by providing a unique opportunity for collaboration between the two communities. Oberlin College students will participate in a month-long training module where they will learn the basic strategies and protocols for facilitating meaningful discussions with teens. Next, they will receive real, hands-on experience with 7th grade students as they prepare for, facilitate, and engage in book club discussions in my ELA classroom. This course will provide Oberlin students with an authentic learning experience for any future teachers or folks curious in learning more about adolescence and education.
