EXCO 425 - The Hunger Games ExCo 1 credit The Hunger Games is one of the most popular book series in the world, with over 100 million copies in print and five film adaptations. But what does this series have to say, and what do our reactions to these books say about us? The purpose of this course is to analyze this series through various sociocultural lenses, as well as consider its many themes. Prepare for both serious analysis and lots of discussion about our favorite characters and plot points. Students will be expected to have either read the four books in the Hunger Games series (Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay), or watched the film adaptations of the series prior to taking this course. Topics will include the Roman history behind character names, the cultural response to the franchise, why love triangles exist in YA, analysis of topics like queerness and disability, and what the series teaches us about war. May the odds be ever in your favor.
