EXCO 631 - UndergroundCo

1 credit
This 1-credit course does a thorough deep dive into modern underground hip-hop, tracing its roots, evolution, and cultural significance. As a class, we will explore diverse themes including independent labels, SoundCloud, artistic expression, and new trends within the realm of the genre. Through analysis of lyrical content, musical production, and cultural contexts, students will gain insight into the phoneme that is the landscape and influence of modern underground hip-hop. From Chief Keef and Speaker Knockerz in the early 2010s, all the way to now with Playboi Carti and his highly influential record label, Opium, we will learn how trends shift and move in underground hip-hop, as well as understand how underground hip-hop shapes trends in pop culture and contemporary music as a whole.
