EXCO 461 - Sherlock Holmes Co 2 credits Since his first appearance in 1887, Sherlock Holmes and his canon of works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have sparked thousands of adaptations, gained immense popularity, and created tropes, motifs, and iconography instantly recognizable in modern media. So what is it about these stories that’s made them retold so many times? Why has this character more than any other spanned so many decades and media types? In Sherlock Holmes Co we will dive into the original Sherlock Holmes stories and the many different media forms these stories have taken since then, including TV series, movies, animation, board games, video games, and more. We will consider what each adaptation has to offer in the larger collection of Sherlock Holmes media in our quest to ultimately understand what makes a cultural phenomenon.
