EXCO 190 - ArchivesCo

In ArchivesCo students learn principles of archiving and record preservation by working first-hand with records of Oberlin’s Affinity Groups. Affinity groups are student groups based in racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, sexual identity, etc. Historically, these affinity groups at Oberlin are not well documented, and often have their documents lost or displaced with the constant overturn of faculty advisors and students. This project aims to help these groups regain/establish sovereignty over how their histories are remembered at Oberlin College. The main learning objective of this course is going to be different for everyone. Some are interested in this course for archival experience, some want to learn how to curate displays, and some want to use this project as a means of making a difference in their community. There is so much value to be extracted from this course, and no matter which way you choose to look at it you will leave the course with an expanded knowledge of the Information Science/Archival field as well as a deeper understanding and appreciation of minority histories at Oberlin.
