2 credits Down with philosophy! When we look back at the old suppositions of reason we find more concealment, error, and deceit than we do truth. But in the act of destroying this tradition, something new is created: a science of madness, poetry, and joy. In this course, we will read Nietzsche’s late works, which inhabit the seam between poetry and philosophy; madness and reason; prophecy and expression. We will also explore the radical thinkers who participate in his project of dismantling philosophy (including Cixous, Fanon, Bataille, Barthes), and the artists who share his spirit. The aim of this course is to acquaint students with Nietzsche’s work and legacy in a productive environment outside the typical philosophy classroom, and to aid them in examining their own methods of thought and creative practice. No prior knowledge of Nietzsche or philosophy necessary.
