EXCO 437 - QueerFilmCo

2 credits
QueerFilmCo aims to introduce students to new queer films, improve knowledge of queer history, and generate discussion around the past, present, and future queer representation in film. Class sessions will be primarily discussion-based. Clips of other related films, film reviews, historical documents, and more may be shown in class to add to the discussion. Additionally, brief contextual information about the production of each film will be presented. Students will be expected to watch 1-2 films before each class and complete readings to prepare for discussion. Major assessments include one essay and one presentation. More information on course requirements can be found on the syllabus. Overall, in this class, I aim to focus on positive representations of queer people and avoid homophobic, negative, violent, or depressing representations. While in some cases I find it necessary to discuss the sorry past (and present) of queer representation to build historical context, I believe focusing on queer joy rather than homophobia can be a radical act and have tried to take this as a guiding principle in the creation of my syllabus.
