EXCO 460 - Star Trexco

1 credit
This course seeks to use episodes taken from Star Trek shows as a means to discuss the Star Trek universe and the subject matter it portrays. Seeing as Star Trek has been designed as a reflection of human reality and an aspiration as to what we can be, topics of the class will include philosophy, futurism, difficult pasts, and individuality, among other things. These concepts will show up in the two analytical avenues of the class, viewing Star Trek through the eyes of the in universe human government, The Federation, as well as how Star Trek, the show, portrays allegories for real life events and movements. Additionally, given that the Star Trek universe contains media going back to the 1960’s, this course also seeks to view such material through a critical lens, specifically to view the show as a reflection of the limitations of television media and the writers themselves.
