2 credits This seminar surveys American Negro folk music from 1800-1950. This class finds Negro folk music has interested and aroused the white man through innate eloquence, within the context of helping to supply a national music along with decades of enthusiasm among musicians; while representing the humanistic and mystical nature of the Negro Soul which forges the historical practice (both traditional and anthemic) set by the stylistic, analytical, and contextual perspectives from Negro pedagogues and practitioners. Class modalities will combine lecture, discussion, and independent research.
