EXCO 703 - KnapCo 1 credit Flintknapping is the oldest known human technology in the world, dating back around 3.2 million years. Archaeologists have been able to replicate how these ancient techniques were done, and now teach students in specialized archaeology labs. We want to make it more accessible to more people, and bring it outside of the traditional specialized space. Over the course of the class, students will learn basic and intermediate techniques of flintknapping, working up from creating basic flakes and scrapers to creating arrowheads. Prior experience is not required, but a general interest in the practice and willingness to make mistakes and learn through them is expected. Majoring in related areas of study is also not required, anyone is welcome to join! Students should expect to have one session a week, with additional assignments of journaling/field notes and watching a couple of videos required. There may be one field trip for the course dependent on car availability and interest, but it is not required.
