EXCO 436 - Mattel Cinematic Universe ExCo

The purpose of this course is to study and analyze the Barbie films in an academic context through the modern lenses of feminist and queer theory. The class will consist of consuming many of the Mattel Cinematic Universe films alongside relevant supplementary materials and discussing them in class. Much of what we will focus on is the adaptation of fairy tales and fables that are meant to educate women on their place in society; we seek alongside Barbie to challenge the ideals set forth by the at-times problematic and patriarchal society we live in. We recognize that these films are meant for young girls and will question the positions taken by the films. Ultimately, we aim to elevate these films to a level where they become a topic of discourse.
