ENGL 310 - Medieval European Literature: From Virgil to Dante
FCARHUWINT4 credits This course will explore the birth of modern European literatures after the fall of the Roman empire. We will be particularly interested in the clash of classical and Christian values, the rise of romance, and the processes of cultural transmission and exchange. Works will include Virgil’s Aeneid, Augustine’s Confessions, Beowulf, Arabic and troubadour love poetry, Arthurian romance, and Dante’s Inferno. All texts will be read in English translation.
Prerequisites: Two 200-level English courses or equivalent
