MUTH 265 - Music In TimeFCCNDP 4 credits This course will focus on temporal aspects of music. We will be guided by a distinction between rhythm–defined as patterns of duration–and meter–defined as layered periodicity. Topics under rhythm will include rhythmic motives, expressive microtiming, pitch-rhythm isomorphisms, and tempo. Meter topics include metrical dissonance, non-isochronous periodicity, limits of perception, and metrical malleability. The repertoire will include popular and art-music from Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and South America. In addition to weekly homework and discussions, all students will complete a final project on a topic of their choice.
Prerequisites: MUTH 132 Music Theory II.
