TECH 111 - Sampling Media

FCCNDP
4 credits
Students will work with recorded sound to explore how media and technology inform the practice of sampling. Students will learn the history of recording and reproduction technologies, appropriation and remix theories, transformative fair use, the grain of media, parody and pastiche, and musical borrowing in a variety of contexts. Through projects bound by techniques but not style, students will create something from something else, with care and intentionality: make beats, tape loops, sound collages, and YouTube Poops! Student responsibilities include reading, watching, and listening assignments; sketches and compositions; class discussions and activities; presentations; and participation in sharing and feedback sessions.

Prerequisites: TECH 101.
