HISP 431 - A New Song: The Cultural Politics of Latin American Music in the Sixties and Seventies

FC ARHU CD WADV
4 credits
In the 1960s and 1970s, Latin American musicians crafted a “nueva canción,” a new song for an age of revolutionary potential. Artists like Violeta Parra and Víctor Jara, Silvio Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés, and Mercedes Sosa drew from popular traditions, international folk music, surrealist literature and political poetry to counter what they saw as banal commercial genres and North American influence. This cultural studies seminar explores the history, music, and poetics of these genres as paradigmatic expressions of their era. Taught in Spanish.

Prerequisites: Two 300-level HISP courses.
