REEE 320 - Empire Imagined: Modern Russia in Art and Literature
FCARHUCD4 credits The course investigates how cultural production shaped and reflected political and social transformations from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. By examining major literary works, paintings, and other artistic expressions, students will analyze how shifting ideas of power, national identity, and cultural heritage contributed to modern Russian consciousness. The course also surveys creative resistance-such as satire and subversion-that challenged official narratives. Through interdisciplinary study, participants gain insight into how imperial ambitions influenced Russian culture, society, and its global perspective, forming the foundation for contemporary understandings of modern Russia.
