FCSSCICD4 credits This upper-level seminar introduces students to conceptions of leadership and its role in social change. We examine leadership through the sociological lenses of access and opportunity, exploring how historically underrepresented and underestimated groups have pushed back against traditional notions of what leadership is as they improve organizations and wider culture. We take an intersectional approach to explorations of leadership and change, analyzing various frameworks, including examinations of how social movements in the past and present have shifted our view of who and what a leader is. For example, to what extent has social media activism created new avenues for organic leadership? This course also provides students with opportunities for self-reflection on their own leadership ethos and praxis, exploring issues including skills development, ethics, and practical applications for creating positive social impact through case studies and real-world projects.
