From the vantage point of a seemingly triumphant scientific modernism, Freud declared religion’s fate to be “the future of an illusion.” How, then, do we make sense of the persistence and flourishing of theological concerns in contemporary culture? In exploring this complex question, we will focus on works of literature and cinema (perhaps other arts) that explore questions of meaning in broad, deep, and specific terms.
