ENGL 225 - Polish Til it Breaks: Modernism after 1922

FC ARHU WINT
4 credits
What do you write when everything’s already been written? Modernism’s watershed year is 1922-year of Ulysses and The Waste Land. But watersheds are turning points, not stopping points. Later writers had to reckon with fundamental questions about literary form: is dialogue about communication, or miscommunication? Is comparison with myth the only way to inject value into daily life? Have the boundaries of literary form been broken, or have we just created new ones? We will explore these questions and more as part of our investigation into Late Modernism. Authors may include Beckett, Bishop, Oppen, and Woolf, among others.
