PHIL 228 - Natural and Artificial MindsFC SSCI 4 credits This course introduces students to important debates concerning natural and artificial minds. We begin with a highly general question: What does it take for a creature to possess a mind? In their search for a defining “mark of the mental,” philosophers have identified three fundamental features of minds: intentionality (aboutness), phenomenal consciousness, and valence. In this class we explore deep controversies surrounding each of these core aspects of mentality.
