POLT 332 - Global MarxismsFC SSCI CD WADV 4 credits Political theory has long treated Marx as an anti-political thinker because of his emphasis on the economy. However, his ideas came to inspire a dazzling range of political activity around the world. What made Marxist theory uniquely receptive to this wide political uptake and what theoretical processes of translation and transformation attended this reception? How does Marxism’s reception outside the West shed new light on the political concepts central to this tradition of theorizing, such as exploitation, self-determination, emancipation, and democracy? Course readings will include primary readings by Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Frantz Fanon, Claudia Jones, Mao Tse-Tung, and Che Guevara in addition to secondary scholarship.
Prerequisites: One course in political theory or a related field. Undergraduate Research Intensive
