RELG 207 - Biblical Prophets and Prophecy

This course will introduce the biblical prophets in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, including Elijah, Amos, Micah, Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel as well as several women prophets and diviners. We will examine the social, political, and religious functions of these prophets in their ancient Israelite setting in order to see their varied roles as communicators, prognosticators, political strategists, religious reformers, visionaries, and much more. We will examine their critiques of the powerful and their call to remember the poor, the widow, and the orphan. We will come to appreciate their poetry, passion, and prophetic voice. This course was formerly taught as JWST/RELG 204.
