ARTH 150 - Approaches to Western ArtFC ARHU WINT 4 credits This is a semi-chronological survey course meant to introduce students to significant art objects and artists as well as to the history and methods of the discipline of art history. It begins in prehistoric Europe and moves through key moments of artistic and critical production in and around the so-called Western world. We will address a variety of periods and tendencies-from antiquity to the Renaissance to disparate strains of modernism-and art-historical methodologies, including iconography, formalism, social art history, feminist art history, and postcolonialism. Visits to the Allen Memorial Art Museum will play an important part in the course.
