SOCI 254 - Political Sociology

This course is intended as an introduction to a major subfield of sociology, the sociology of politics. We will begin with basic concepts (power, types of authority, the state, representation, citizenship rights). We will explore the rise of the state and advent of citizenship rights, the social conditions of democracy, class conflict, bureaucratization, elite theory, the crisis of American democracy, and the rise of autocracy worldwide.

Prerequisites: one introductory course in POLT or SOCI.
