CAST 317 - Transgender Cultural StudiesFC ARHU CD 4 credits What is trans culture? How do questions of representation and composition factor into what counts as trans art, literature, or media? In this course, we will look intersectionally, historically, and globally through multiple genres and art forms to interrogate what trans culture is and how we make it, consume it, and study it. We will ask how interlocking systems of oppression dictate and drive representation and narrative. We will explore how trans artists work within or resist these systems to (re)construct their own narratives and images. By looking at work by, for, or about transgender people, we will explore the variety of narratives that emerge across time and space that impact art and politics, both historically and in the contemporary moment.
This course is cross-listed with GSFS-317
