FYSP 194 - The Sixth Extinction: Problems and Prospects in Biodiversity ConservationFC NSMA WINT 4 credits We will explore the challenges and opportunities in the conservation of biodiversity, using readings from a wide variety of sources as well as multiple weekend afternoon field trips to sites of local conservation interest. Among the topics we will discuss are the value of biodiversity, the feasibility of saving all biodiversity, ethical dilemmas in conservation management, and creative ways to preserve biodiversity in the face of sometimes competing legal, social, and economic agendas. Off-campus field trips required.
