FYSP 118 - The Jewish MidwestFC ARHU WINT 4 credits While most people associate American Jews with New York City, Jews have in fact lived in diverse American places - including the American Midwest - almost since the beginning of European colonization. This course will introduce students to this history, with a special focus on northeast Ohio, on synagogues, and on oral history as a means of learning about the past. Students will conduct oral histories with members of Park Synagogue, a congregation in Cleveland that has entrusted part of its historic synagogue building to Oberlin College. Field trip(s) required.
