FYSP 049 - The HeLa Revolution: The Past, Present, and Future of Research EthicsFC ARHU CD WINT 4 credits From the advent and industrialization of immortalized human cells, to the ethical dilemmas of AI, this seminar will explore the advancements made possible by research across STEM disciplines and the inherent ethical issues raised along the way. Through a deep examination of the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”, students will discuss issues at the intersection of science and society, and the ethical guidelines in research established throughout the years. In this course, students will engage in group discussions, give in-class presentations, and complete self-reflective writing assignments. Students will also learn how to conduct an in-depth review of scientific literature. Open only to students participating in Oberlin College’s STRONG program.
