SOCI 214 - Get Up, Stand Up! Collective Behavior and Social Movements

FC SSCI CD
4 credits
What are social movements? Why do people protest? How do social movements decide what strategies and tactics to use in their activities? What makes a social movement successful? These are some questions this course addresses. We explore the origins, operations, and consequences of social movements via sociological theory and empirical case studies with a focus on both structural (e.g., access to resources and political processes) and cultural (e.g., framing, identities, and emotions) forces that animate and constrain collective behavior. We will examine a variety of social movements, including for Civil Rights, feminism, environmentalism, and LGBT rights.
