This introductory course studies the communities, structures, and processes that have shaped the creation of “Asian America” and “Asian Americans.” Through a focus on cultural production and community memory work alongside archival sources and theoretical frameworks, this course will serve as an introduction to key theories, questions, and methods in the field of Asian American Studies. We will explore the relationships between race and place, migration and labor, and settler colonialism and capitalism from an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective, informed by the histories and experiences of other minoritized communities within the U.S. empire.
