REEE 446 - Senior Seminar: The Caucasus- Captivating Imagination

FC ARHU CD WADV
4 credits
This seminar is about the Caucasus as a real place in the modern imagination - where fantasies of freedom concealed realities of conquest and control. We will begin our study by reading 19th century Russian classics, in which the Caucasus appear as a frontier for exploring questions of freedom, oppression, and Russian national identity. We will compare these works with memoirs and contemporary responses by writers from Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and conclude by studying the Caucasus in the Soviet cinematic imagination. Through readings, essays, and round-table discussions, students will refine advanced language skills. Conducted in Russian. This course is repeatable with a change in topic.

Prerequisites: RUSS 305.
