CRWR 279 - Weird Tales

FC ARHU CD WINT PRAX
4 credits

Although “weird” fiction has been historically associated with supernatural stories, a story might also be considered weird because of its surreal, fantastical, or absurdist qualities. This course will examine the notion of weirdness in a variety of short stories that transcend genres and operate within the distinct rules of their respective worlds. In addition to assessing what makes a story weird, we will consider the ways certain authors distort reality in order to dramatize the human condition and explore the nexus between the personal and political. A writing workshop will be maintained over the course of the semester. Students will be expected to produce two short stories that incorporate elements of weirdness.
