MUTH 258 - Theoretical Perspectives on Music CognitionFC CNDP 4 credits This class examines the approaches that music theorists have taken in the field of music cognition. It explores the broad trends in the field since the 1950’s, including work done in expectation, cross-domain mapping, schema theory, musical mapping, ecological psychology, and affordances. What unites these ideas is their view that musical understanding is informed by the cognitive capacities of humans. This class focuses on reading and discussing relevant research methods, and emphasizes writing about musical understanding.
Prerequisites: MUTH 132.
