FYSP 016 - Biblical Migrations in American Novels

FC ARHU WINT
4 credits
Beginning with the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, the Bible tells stories of migration. In this seminar, we will read four American novels alongside biblical stories of migration that surface within them: The Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler); Pachinko (Min Jin Lee); Lila (Marilynne Robinson); and The Book of Esther (Emily Barton). How do biblical stories inform our reading of modern novels? How do modern novels make us reconsider biblical narratives? How do both speak to human experiences of displacement, loss, and a longing for home?
