ANTH 235 - Style, Interaction, and Social Meaning

FC SSCI
4 credits
Through speech and conversation, we connect with others and, in the process, reflect on, organize, and construct our social reality. This course introduces students to various analytical frameworks for understanding language variation and social interaction, examining how these elements relate to speakers’ personae, identities, and the social dynamics in which they are situated. Students will explore the structure and expression of meaning across diverse social levels and communities, engage with social issues and processes of change through the lens of language and interaction, and develop a project that applies the conceptual and analytical tools introduced in the course.

This course is appropriate for new students.
