EVSS 395 - The History of Climate Change

The world is facing a climate crisis - but how did we get here, and how have humans conceptualized climate change over time and across cultures? This course takes a historical approach to climate change, covering: anthropogenic local climate change caused by deforestation and intensive agriculture; medieval and early modern climate change; the theorization and discovery of anthropogenic warming; the development of the fossil fuel economy; disinformation and denial; the creation of institutional structures to combat climate change; and the relative successes of mitigation and adaptation strategies. Main project: original research paper on climate history. Recommended preparation: ENVS 101 and/or prior HIST courses. Course reserved for second year students and above.
