CMPL 276 - Home and Away: Migration and Homecoming in Jewish Literature and Film

FC ARHU CD WINT
4 credits
Jews were historically portrayed as the paradigmatic diasporic people and narratives of displacement and homecoming have always occupied a central place in Jewish thought. In this course, we will read a wide array of texts from different languages and genres to explore Jewish perspectives on migration and homecoming and their relation to literary writing. Our sources include prose, poetry, film, and graphic novels from Asia, Europe, Africa, and America which we will discuss in relation to sociocultural and political categories such as gender, sexuality, class, and nationalism. Authors include Sholem Aleichem, Elias Canetti, Lea Goldberg, and André Aciman.

This course is appropriate for new students.
This course is cross-listed with JWST-276
