ARTH 240 - Modern and Contemporary Art of the Middle EastFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course explores key issues in Middle Eastern and North African history since the nineteenth century through art history and visual culture. It asks: What is modernity in the Middle East, and how was the region “produced” in images? Through paintings, films, performances, posters, and photographs produced by the people of the Middle East, we examine how wars, revolts, and revolutions were fought at the level of representation; how gender and race were negotiated; how colonialism and anticolonialism shaped nation-states; how art reflects transformations of Islam; and why the region became linked to Islam despite its religious diversity?
Prerequisites: One 100-level course in ARTH.
