The production, distribution, restriction and consumption of psychoactive drugs have been present throughout the entire history of human civilization. This history is at one and the same time a history of law, politics, trade, medicine, culture and the construction (and deconstruction) of the self. In this course, we will examine recent historical research on psychoactive drugs and their significance from the eighteenth century to the present day.
